This Amazon service is perfectly targeted for those files you never know what to do with, like old pictures from school and those holiday pictures you simply have to take every year. Instead of keeping them on your computer, you can put them away for less than a dollar per month.
You might think that storing your cold data on hard drives will be even cheaper, or that storing it along with the data you use frequently (your hot data) will be simpler. Let us tell you all about why there simply isn’t any better option out there than Amazon Glacier so that you never have to worry about cold data ever again!
Amazon Glacier vs. Hard Drives
Storing your cold data on a hard drive may seem like a great option. You just save everything on an external drive and you put it away until you need to access it again. But considering that it might be years until you ever want to look through your old vacation photos, you might find yourself trying to work with an outdated device that is no longer compatible with your computer.
You could also damage the drive in this time or you could lose it all together while cleaning up or moving. Ultimately, there are so many things that could go wrong with this data storage method. And why would you complicate your life with hard drives when you could get Amazon Glacier for only a few dollars per year?
Amazon Glacier would keep your data safe for as long as you like. You won’t even have to think about it until you want to access the data again. You wouldn’t even have to store anything in your office or your home. Also, it would be much cheaper to keep your data online through the Amazon Glacier storing service than investing in a hard drive that will most likely be outdated by the time you want to see your vacation pictures again.
Amazon Glacier vs. Regular Cloud Storage Services
The main difference between cloud storage services for hot and cold data is the price range. While it may cost you $5-10 per month to store the data you need to access regularly, Amazon Glacier would only cost you $0.007/GB/month.
Regular cloud storage services are meant to keep your data available at all times and it is expected that you will want to access it quite often. Cold data, on the other hand, is expected to remain untouched for quite some time until you actually need it. This is why you will have to pay a small fee every time you want to retrieve your files. It would be stored safely for you and you would be able to use that data anytime you want.
But think about? How often would you actually want to look back at your vacation pics and reminisce? This is why it makes sense that you pay less to store it away on the cloud. The Amazon Glacier backup service offers you an excellent price, so it is by far, the best option you have out there for your cold data.
Amazon Glacier Pricing

Amazon Glacier Client Data Security
Amazon Glacier client data is protected at all times by encrypting it. The service uses an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit symmetric keys system to encrypt all data by default. Then it will be stored in immutable archives, which means that your data will remain exactly as you have uploaded it into Amazon Glacier, as modifications cannot be made to it at this point.
As for data transfers, they will be kept safe by using a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) system. This way, you won’t have to worry about the files you store with Amazon Glacier until you want to access them again because they will be kept safe and sound.
