The Best Free Cloud Storage: Top 6 Services

This post will cover the best free cloud storage services that you can subscribe to. We know that paying money for cloud storage isn’t cemented in our culture – partly because people don’t really believe in the benefits and the security of cloud storage services, but they are starting to. And, mainly, because if there’s a free cloud storage option, why not go for it?

We can’t answer the question regarding what is the best free cloud storage, because, to be frank, there isn’t really an industry standard at the moment. Cloud storage services are in the process of shaping up and forming a standard, though. However, until then, let’s take a look at our list of the best free cloud storage services.

1. Best Free Cloud Storage: Dropbox

The Best Free Cloud Storage

Official Website for One of the Best Free Cloud Storage Sites – Dropbox.

What we like: Dropbox is considered one of the best free storage cloud services, and we concur. The free option offers  up to 2 GB of storage space (but you can earn up to 5 GB), the ability to recover files that were lost in the past 30 days, and even Office 365 integration, which is a must to small businesses and big enterprises as well. It provides a secure, and reliable way to centralize all of your important information.

What we don’t like: You can’t collaborate in real-time with other users on the same files, which takes a way from the best cloud free storage status, but just a little.

If you plan on moving from the free subscription to a paid one, below you’ll find what plans Dropbox has to offer.

2. Best Free Cloud Storage: Google Drive

The Best Free Cloud Storage - Google Drive

Official Website for One of the Best Free Online Cloud Storage – Google Drive.

What we likeOne of the best cloud storage for free, Google Drive offers 15 GB of cloud storage at no cost. You just need to make a G-Mail account – which is also free, by the way; and the Google Drive is automatically paired with it. Google Drive also offers fantastic cloud management tools, as videos under 15 minutes, and under a certain resolution, don’t count to your total storage quota, which quickly turns it into a best free unlimited cloud storage service – with its kinks, of course.

What we don’t like: We don’t like that it doesn’t have any task management tools, and verification can become cumbersome real fast if you haven’t handled a cloud storage service before.

3. Best Free Cloud Storage: OneDrive

The Best Free Cloud Storage - OneDrive

Official Website for One of the Best Cloud Storage for Free Services – OneDrive.

What we like: One of the best online cloud storage free services, OneDrive offers up to 15 GB of cloud storage at no cost. We love the fact that it has social media integration, meaning that it’s the ideal cloud storage service to share files and data with colleagues across multiple devices and platforms. Yet, its key feature is that OneDrive is fully integrated with Office, making it a fantastic tool for businesses. It also wasn’t affected by the Heartbleed security vulnerability, due to not using OpenSSL.

What we don’t like: Sadly, it doesn’t have fast download or upload speeds – in fact, they are quite slow. Also, there’s a 10 GB cap per file and no local encryption. We didn’t have great experiences with the iOS app, as it crashed, froze and even failed to display correct data. But, the most worrying thing is that Microsoft has implemented the NSA open door policy, making your personal information subject to unwanted eyes.

If you plan on moving from the free subscription to a paid one, below you’ll find what plans OneDrive has to offer.

4. Best Free Cloud Storage: Box

Best Free Cloud Storage Box

Official Website for One of the Best Free Cloud Storage Services – Box.

What we like: This is one of the best cloud storage free services, and Box is even older than Dropbox. Founded in 2005, it offers a pretty great free subscription option. Many people aren’t that familiar with it, mainly because it’s focused on providing businesses with cloud solutions. But, in the past couple of years, Box has started offering personal plans that are competitively priced. Box is easy to use, and incredibly responsive, rich in features and it’s designed for collaboration.

What we don’t like: Truly, it’s one of the best free secure cloud storage but it has its shortcomings. File size limit is incredibly low, and files bigger than 250 MB can’t be uploaded.

If you plan on moving from the free subscription to a paid one, below you’ll find what plans Box has to offer.

5. Best Free Cloud Storage: iCloud

The Best Free Cloud Storage - iCloud

Official Website for One of the Best Cloud Storage Free Services – iCloud.

What we likeIt’s considered to be one of the best free cloud storage for photos. iCloud comes for free when you purchase an iOS device or a OS X machine. It’s also incredibly easy to install on Windows computers. Managing iCloud is like a walk in the park. The web interface is fantastic as the user has everything he, or she, needs, wrapped around in a elegant and simple design.

What we don’t like: While this may be one of the best free cloud storage providers, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have its issues. Third-party app integration suffers tremendously. iCloud doesn’t offer useful, if any, collaborative tools for users working on distinct systems.

While iCloud is available for iOS, that doesn’t mean Android users can’t take advantage of its awesome features. iCloud is known as one of the best free cloud storage for Android. Read our article on How to Manage iCloud Storage on Android (Mobile Devices).

6. Best Free Cloud Storage: SpiderOak

Best Free Cloud Storage - SpiderOak

Official Website for One of the Best Cloud Free Storage Services – SpiderOak.

What we likeThis free best cloud storage option has powerful privacy and security options. SpiderOak offers an unlimited amount of computers the ability to use the same account. It offers little cloud storage space, but considering how incredibly secure it is, we can look passed it.

What we don’t likeIt’s absurdly hard to share something, and pretty slow. The web interface doesn’t have a search function.

If you plan on moving from the free subscription to a paid one, below you’ll find what plans SpiderOak has to offer.
