How to Manage Cloud Storage Data as Your Team Grows

Once your team grows, you’ll have to effectively manage cloud storage data so essential information isn’t lost in the cloud’s crevices. Cloud storage, like any other platform where you can input data, requires management. To manage multiple cloud storage services means a lot of hindsight and a good understanding of the bigger picture.

Yet, you can’t do this alone, and every cloud storage data management specialist needs tools to control and handle sensitive information. To manage cloud storage data, Admins can use a Web browser, APIs and command lines – it depends on what cloud computing data management service is chosen and the level of control they provide. Ultimately, your goal here is to ensure that the selected provider’s management tools pair well with your business’ needs.

To better understand and manage cloud storage data, it’s crucial to know how the interface works, and what, if there are any, manageability issues that you may encounter using cloud storage providers. It’s better to look for a Web interface, which allows direct access to cloud storage tools. Take Amazon Web Services, you can use command-line – CLI; or Management Console interface.

When planning to develop software that meshes with cloud storage services, you have to be sure that it’s compatible, and that it works in harmony with standards such as REST, and SOAP – Representational State Transfer and Simple Object Access Protocol. These are web interfaces that support various development platforms. There are APIs, which are available for cloud services that can drastically streamline and simplify on-premises software development for cloud storage providers. Google Cloud Storage XML API, for example, fully accepts the REST interface, as well as the company’s JSON API – JavaScript Object Notation.

Data storage security in cloud computing is indeed important, but look beyond it. Take AWS, Amazon Web Services. It supports automatic migration, meaning that it can move stored data from S3 – Simple Storage Service; to Glacier, according to the storage object’s age. Considering that Glacier is dramatically less expensive than Simple Storage Service, your team can enforce standard storage lifecycle management to archive out-dated, old and seldom accessed data. Another essential feature, that you absolutely need when time comes to manage the cloud data, is automatic deletion. Businesses can push data retention policies and meet the criteria required for regulatory compliance by removing expired or old data.

Ensuring data storage security in cloud computing is important considering that companies can store content, theoretically, anywhere in the world. Yet, this practice isn’t acceptable for businesses in certain locations across the planet. Mainly because it’s seen as improperly stored data, which carries serious legal and security issues that breach regulatory compliance requirements. Cloud storage manager AWS S3 provides the user with the option to stipulate in what geographic region the sensitive data can be stored.

How to manage multiple cloud storage services

How to Manage Cloud Storage Data

Nobody wants to pay for cloud storage services. More so, considering how many cloud storage free options are available. Yet, free services are more often than not highly limited, and features, while quite useful for small businesses, prove to be underwhelming for big enterprises. In the process of passing that bridge, you realize that you need to backup a lot more files. Meaning, opening multiple accounts and learning to manage cloud storage data on various platforms.

To manage multiple cloud storage services is indeed a hassle, and maintaining various accounts, each with a different set of credentials is a living nightmare. More so, if you forget where the file you are looking for is located, you can say goodbye to your lunch-break.

This is where we cue in managing cloud storage services.

Instead of painstakingly searching through your multiple cloud storage services, you can use software that serves as a portal where all of them can be accessed with just one log in. From there, you can see, edit and organize everything.

Unifyle cloud data storage manager

How to Manage Cloud Storage Data with Unifyle

Unifyle is a free online cloud storage for data available on Android and Apple devices. Unifyle can also be accessed through a web browser if you are using a Windows-based machine.

This business-oriented cloud storage management application is available for a variety of cloud-based services such as:

  • SkyDrive
  • Dropbox
  • Google Drive
  • Box

… and more!

Your data is spread over multiple servers like:

  • NFS
  • SAMBA
  • SharePoint
  • FTP

… and some cloud services as well!

Your employees will have access to content straight from mobile devices to view, edit and organize files. The software displays any changes that have taken place in the last twenty-four hours. This way, you can have a better overview of what’s going on and manage cloud storage data easier, from one main interface.

Once at the dashboard, users can note that data is split in three easy-to-understand categories: E-Mail, Photos and Documents. Besides providing a much needed centralization feature, it also offers the user e-mail management capabilities. In addition to this, users can provide access to other users to various social media accounts.

As we said before data security in the cloud is super important, and Unifyle uses 256-HTTP encryption to protect your sensitive information.

What we like: Easy to manage cloud storage data. Free account option available.

What we don’t like: This cloud storage management software is quite expensive for what it has to offer. The free account is vastly limited. It lacks the OAuth ability, which can be of some concern.

JoliCloud data storage manager

How to Manage Cloud Storage Data with JoliCloud

Sporting some of the same features as Unifyle, this cloud storage management software is the easiest one we’ve used so far. Yet, instead of providing the user with e-mail centralization, you have the ability to access any social feed from:

  • Feedly
  • Facebook
  • Google+

Making it the quintessential tool for the social media specialist, or if you’re business is into developing campaigns on those three social platforms.

To access data from various cloud providers, users have to go to the Drive section. However, unlike the aforementioned cloud storage manager, JoliCloud allows to edit documents inside the service, without asking you to first log out and then log into the individual platform. This is a great tool for those who want to work from a single location.

As an added bonus, users can open PDFs and watch videos too.

This business-oriented cloud storage management application is available for a variety of cloud-based services such as:

  • Dropbox
  • Google Drive
  • Box

… and more!

Yet, the biggest problem with the JoliCloud is that it’s not as easy to move files from one to place to another, like it’s with Unifyle. Several users that were sporting free accounts have noted that there was absolutely no way to move certain files from one provider to another. We found a way to do so, but it was incredibly difficult and we wouldn’t recommend it if you aren’t tech savvy. Using a premium account, however, alleviates this issue and helps you manage cloud storage data easier.

Talking about security, this cloud storage manager has better standings than Unifyle. It comes with OAuth, and the software doesn’t store any information – as well, it doesn’t have access to credentials.

What we like: This cloud computing data storage manager has good security standings. It has a free account option. It’s easy and intuitive.

What we don’t like: The JoliCloud is more expensive than Unifyle, but just slightly. Free accounts are highly limited. Be warned that neither the premium nor free accounts offer any backup space whatsoever!
